Conman shot nails into himself

A CONMAN shot himself seven times with a nail gun in a bid to win compensation, a court heard.
X-ray ... five nails in chest David Russell blasted five two-inch nails into his chest and another two into his forearm.
One came within an inch of his heart and those in his arm bent as they hit bone.
Russell’s blood-soaked T-shirt was pinned to his body.
Arm in pain ... two nails in limb Doctors took an hour to remove the nails.
Russell, 38, told cops he was wounded by muggers.
But he later admitted inflicting the injuries on himself in the hope of landing a handout from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.
He owned up after cops uncovered inconsistencies in his story and were unable to find witnesses or evidence to support it.
In agony ... Russell Telephone engineer Russell claimed three youths grabbed him from behind and fired a 10in-long nail gun at him.
A judge at Gloucester Crown Court said Russell faced jail after hearing that he had pulled off another stunt three years ago — and won £4,175 damages.
Shot himself with ... nail gun Russell admitted perverting the course of justice and also pleaded guilty to a similar count relating to the previous incident.
He will be sentenced after psychiatric assessment.
